The mixed pairs quarter-final line-up has been confirmed at the World Bowls Junior Indoor Championship at Hong Kong Football Club, Hong Kong, China.
In tomorrow’s knock-out rounds, England’s Ruby Hill and Aaron Johnson, who topped section one, will face Emma Boyd and Owen Kirby, of Canada, who claimed second place in section two, while Malaysia’s Amril Danial Abdul Rahim and Nur Ain Kemilia Sukri, winners of section four, will play Sophie McGrouther and Paul Innes, of Scotland, runners-up in section three. Group two table toppers, Australia’s Kira Bourke and Kane Nelson, who are the only country unbeaten so far in the contest, will take on Hong Kong China’s Emmy Luk and Nixon Man, who clinched second place in section one, while their fellow Hong Kong Youth Development colleagues Gillian Ng and Quenton Ip, who won section three, will come up against South Africa’s Lezandri Hildebrand and Alwyn Martignone, who were second in group four.
There’s been plenty of action in the men’s and women’s singles too which is getting down to the final group stages.
A number of the mixed pairs qualifiers also maintain interests in the singles namely McGrouther, Nelson, Martignone and Ip who hold unbeaten records so far in their respective disciplines, plus Hill, Ng, Innes, Kirby, Johnson, Man and Rahim, while also bidding for singles glory and holding top spots in their tables are Ireland’s Jayden Kyle, Angeleca Abatayo from the Philippines, and Abbie Chan, of Hong Kong China.
It’s worth noting the record of Queenslander Nelson who has returned winning scorecards in all seven games he’s played so far in both competitions.
A number of the players featuring appear in World Bowls Series ranking list, including Boyd, 72nd, Hill 97th, McGrouther, 98th, Bourke 166th and Abatayo 252nd in the women’s list and Nelson 146th and Rahim 239th in the men’s.
Co-sanctioned by World Bowls and the International Indoor Bowls Council (IIBC), 42 of the world’s best young bowlers, all 25 or under, who hail from 21 countries, are playing in the seven-day event.
Round robin matches in the singles continue today (Friday). The quarter-finals and semi-finals take place on Saturday, with the finals on Sunday.
