SCOT OF THE ATLANTIC?
Scottish bowlers won two gold and two silver medals on the last day of the Atlantic Bowls Championships, while England won two gold and two bronze medals. Ireland grabbed gold in the women’s singles, and the Channel Island of Jersey celebrated winning the men’s fours title.
The Scottish haul included titles in the women’s fours and men’s overall team event, but they had to settle for silver in the men’s singles and men’s fours – events in which they had struck gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
Wellingborough’s Jamie Walker, who has a prolific singles record indoors and out in England, played superbly to beat Scotland’s Commonwealth Games champion Darren Burnett, 21-15, in the men’s singles final, but an English double was out of teh question, after Torquay’s Sophie Tolchard slipped up against Saskia Schaft, from the Netherlands, in the women’s singles semi finals.
Schaft had to give best to Ireland’s Catherine Beattie, who was Catherine McMillen when she won the title at the same venue four years ago. Beattie, who beat Schaft, 21-10, thus became the first woman to successfully defend the title.
Bex Craig, Lorraine Malloy, Stacey McDougall and Claire Johnston, from Scotland, opened up a 17-8 lead over Welsh quartette Laura Daniels, Jess Sims, Kath Pearce and Anwen Butten, in the final of the women’s fours, and held on grimly to win, 18-14.
But the biggest surprise of the day was the way Greg Davis, Scott Ruderham, Cyril Renouf and Gus ‘Skippy’ Hodgetts kept a tight rein on Scotland’s high-flying Stewart Anderson, Neil Speirs, Paul Foster and Alex Marshall, and returned a 15-14 scorecard in the final of the men’s fours.
As the sun sets on the Athena Beach Hotel, where eighteen countries have enjoyed two weeks’ competition in the Atlantic championships, we look at who won medals in the second week, and which countries have qualified for next year’s World Bowls in Christchurch , New Zealand, in singles and fours by finishing in the top five in their groups.
