Junior Jackaroos in world title clean sweep

The hosting Australians claimed the major proportion of the medal haul at the World Junior Championships, which concluded at the Broadbeach Bowls Club on Australia’s Gold Coast today.

The young Jackaroos won all three gold medals on offer, with Aaron Wilson claiming the men’s singles championship and Ellen Ryan collecting the women’s equivalent, her second gold medal in the championship after she and Aaron Teys powered to victory in the mixed pairs competition.

Wilson defeated host club hero Sean Ingham 21-12 in the final, while Ryan scored 10 unanswered shots over four ends after the scores were tied at 11-11 against Malaysia’s Syafiqa Rhaman.

Earlier in the day, Teys and Ryan, the reigning Australian Open singles champions, ironically won at Broadbeach, recovered from a one-shot deficit at the halfway point to claim the mixed pairs title with a 19-14 scoreline against the Welsh combination of Jarrad Breen and Melanie Thomas.

The young Aussies, who are originate from regional country towns, Teys from Ballina and Ryan from Goulburn, but now represent the powerhouse Warilla and Cabramatta clubs, scorched from 8-11 down after eleven ends to hold a 19-11 lead with three ends to play in the 18-end final.

Three consecutive singles to the gallant Welsh combination saw the popular mixed pairs championship decided.
