The launch of the West Africa bowls launch in Ghana was one of the standout events in 2025

World Bowls has achieved several ‘big rocks’ from its strategy in 2025.

That was one of the key highlights of the AGM held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the first time World Bowls has held its AGM in Asia.

Milestone achievements included the completion of the merger with the International Bowls for the Disabled (IBD), confirmed inclusion in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), provisional membership of the World Pétanque and Bowls Federation, the launch of the World Bowls Academy, and World Bowls Hall of Fame, and the inaugural World Cup.

The AGM, chaired by President Brett O’Riley alongside the World Bowls Board and CEO Neil Dalrymple, was held at the conclusion of the World Cup. It was attended in person by Asian regional delegates from member nations, along with delegates from the 12 nations that participated in the World Cup. There was also a strong on-line contingent.

The updated strategic plan was presented which deepens the sport’s commitment to diversity and inclusion with a strong focus on research and classification and develops capability and capacity through the new World Bowls Academy.

The AGM also saw the re-election to the Board of past president Darryl Clout.

Other key points from the AGM include the Bowls for Brisbane campaign for participation in the 2032 Olympics which remains a strong focus for World Bowls, along with the confirmed participation in the 2026 and 2030 Commonwealth Games.

The World Bowls Series continues to expand with a total of 30 events globally, and new events in China, Japan, and New Zealand.

In addition, development of new countries remains a key focus with the West Africa bowls launch in Ghana having been a standout activity. This led to other developing nations including Uganda joining World Bowls, while other nations are in discussions including some with a Para bowls focus.

At the AGM, life membership was bestowed on two legends who have been trailblazers for development of the sport over many years – Sheila Corcoran from Australia was honoured for distinguished service to para bowls, while journalist David Rhys Jones was recognised for devoting over 60 years to reporting on championship events around the globe.
