Coaches play a key role in the development of players and the wider growth of bowls, but coaching credibility is not always defined by what someone has achieved on the green.
In her latest coaching article for Bowls International, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ellen Falkner MBE looks at why strong coaching goes beyond playing experience.
She explores the qualities that help coaches build trust and credibility, including communication, consistency, relationships, continued learning and the ability to create meaningful improvement in the players they work with.
Falkner also considers the wider coaching culture within bowls and why greater recognition of coaching as a discipline could help strengthen the sport at every level.
Her message is simple: great coaches should be recognised for the people and players they help develop, not only for the trophies they may have won themselves.
