Considered to be one of the leading bowlers of his generation, Tony Allcock was twice world outdoor singles champion and three times world indoor singles champion. He has also won the world outdoor fours title twice, and the triples once. Indoors, Tony won the world pairs title eight times. Including the Leonard Trophy, he has 17 world titles to his credit.
Born to play bowls, Tony’s mother Joan was an England international, who gave birth in between two rounds of her club singles championship – which she went on to win! Tony first qualified for the English national championships out of his county of Leicestershire when he was 16, and he skipped for England indoors when he was only 19.
He virtually retired as a player when he took on the role of CEO of the English Bowling Association (now Bowls England) in 2002. Having been appointed MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 1989, Tony was promoted to OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 2019.
