The prestigious champion of champions trophy will indeed return to Johannesburg after a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 edition of the 2024 Bowls South Africa Mixed Pairs at Newcastle Bowling Club.
Following on from Gerry Baker and Hailey Erasmus, the Evans pair ensured that the bragging rights remain firmly in JBA.
Celebrating its centenary, Newcastle Bowling Club saw fireworks throughout the competition as the district winners attempted to play their way to the gold medal.
All eyes were fixed on blue section which saw Jason Evans and wife Louise fighting for top spot alongside the likes of WP (Neil Burkett and Olivia Carelui), Northern Cape (current Protea CP Mathewson skipping) and Southern Free State (another married duo in Wayne and Lara York).
It was a fascinating section and appeared it would rest on the winner of Evans vs Burkett in the penultimate game. And what a contest it was as Burkett produced a brilliant shot to win by one following a superb fightback by JBA.
The drama was not over as Team Evans pipped EP by a single shot in the final game to give themselves the faintest chance of qualifying should WP lose to the young duo of Badenhorst/Fourie from Sedibeng.
Indeed, the youngsters ended in fine style as they moved Burkett and Carelui to bronze with a 16-14 victory.
That allowed the Evans’ to play for gold and it was an opportunity they wouldn’t let slip despite some serious opposition from North West (Britz/Wolvaard).
JBA managed to win the thrilling finale 17-15.
The win added yet another major title to Evan’s CV although he was quick to point out he didn’t do it alone.
“No, it was a massive team effort and full credit to Louise. She was outstanding … not just in the big games against tough opposition but also in the ones where we might’ve started as the favourites,” said Evans, the reigning BSA Masters champion.
“It was a long, hard tournament so we’re just relieved to be standing here. Obviously, we needed a favour in the last game and then this one, wow, it was tough but so proud of my wife,” added Evans.
“To win this big tournament, with your wife, how can it get any better?”
Louise was equally proud of the achievement.
She said: “What an awesome tournament, my cheeks are still sore from smiling … It was a great week and well done to everyone who represented their districts in Newcastle.
“Thank you so much to Newcastle Bowling Club and their members for their amazing hospitality, it was second to none.”
Having the final say, Louise added: “I have to say the biggest thank you to Jason … for having confidence in me and always believing in me.”
