Bowls Uganda has taken an important step forward in the development of the sport, progressing its application for bowls to be formally recognised as a national sport in the country.

The initiative follows discussions with Commonwealth Games Uganda President Dr Donald Rukare, as Bowls Uganda continues working with national sporting authorities to establish the sport within the country’s official sporting structure. The progress marks a significant milestone for the sport and supports the long-term development of bowls in Uganda.

Alongside these efforts, Bowls Uganda continues preparing athletes as it looks towards future international competition. Currently three male and three female players are training as the federation awaits confirmation from the Uganda Olympic Committee regarding the sports programme for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Training sessions are continuing as the group works to build experience and develop their skills in the sport.

The organisation is also focused on introducing bowls to new participants through grassroots initiatives. As part of this work, Bowls Uganda recently delivered a bowls demonstration during Commonwealth Day celebrations at Olive School Namugongo, giving students and the wider community an opportunity to learn about the sport.

This forms part of a wider Bowls in Schools programme aimed at building awareness and participation across the country, while creating opportunities for future players to become involved in the sport.

The progress being made highlights the continued expansion of bowls into new regions, with local leaders working to establish strong foundations for the sport. World Bowls welcomes the steps being taken in Uganda and looks forward to supporting the continued development of bowls in the country.
